DONALD TRUMP HAS CROSSED THE LINE.
By firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller, he has launched an assault on the rule of law, and plunged the country into a profound Constitutional crisis.
Here's what we have to do immediately to defend democracy:
Step 1: TAKE TO THE STREETS and show your outrage
By firing Mueller, the President has asserted that he is above the law. The hours ahead will determine whether he is proved right. Congress has the constitutional authority and obligation to hold the President accountable for this abuse of power. But we've seen the Republican Congress give him pass after pass every time he crosses another line.
If this isn't the moment they put country over party to hold the President accountable, it's not clear whether it will ever happen. Let's show our lawmakers that we won't stand by while they allow Donald Trump to slide the US into authoritarianism. Join one of 800+ events planned around the country. Demand that the FBI investigation is preserved and restored!
step 2: demand a senate select committee
Of course we want the FBI investigation preserved and restored. But that's not enough.
Our public protest includes a demand for a Senate Select Committee to begin an urgent, independent, bipartisan investigation. Mueller's firing must lead to the creation of a modern-day analogue of the Senate Select Watergate Committee to investigate all matters involved in the Russia scandals and Trump's obstruction of the investigation. At this point, we are past the stage where individual Senate committees with their own limited jurisdictions can effectively deal with the broad-ranging investigation that would be required.
step 3: DEMAND HOUSE JUDICIARY HEARINGS ON ABUSE OF POWER AND OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE
We demand the House immediately begin bipartisan hearings in the Judiciary Committee on Donald Trump's blatant abuse of power and obstruction of justice. These hearings can and likely should lead to an impeachment investigation. Many will come to the conclusion that this Presidency must end- Donald Trump has betrayed the rule of law, and his oath to uphold the Constitution.
Members of Congress who are sworn to uphold the Constitution must look beyond party and do what is best for America. Now is the time to hold Donald Trump to account.
