March For Truth Joins 80 Groups Urging Congressional Leaders to Strengthen Public Support for Special Counsel Mueller’s Investigation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nearly 80 national and state pro-democracy, civil rights, ethics, labor and advocacy groups are calling on congressional leaders to support Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and to ensure that Mueller be allowed to conclude his work unimpeded.

The groups’ letter to congressional leaders cites Donald Trump’s troubling public statements lashing out at the FBI saying the agency’s reputation for fairness is “in tatters” and that its standing is the “worst in history” after former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn’s recent indictment. Trump’s unsolicited and harsh rebukes, including when Trump called the investigation a “witch hunt,” are an attempt to undermine the credibility of Mueller’s investigation.

The organizations, who together represent tens of millions of Americans, are encouraging Congress to support the Mueller investigation and include the American Federation of Teachers, Democracy 21, Every Voice, CenterLink, Common Defense, Church Women United in New York, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, MoveOn.org, NAACP, Public Citizen, and more than 65 other organizations.

The letter also cites important U.S. Senate legislation that has been introduced to protect the special counsel and his investigation. In August, U.S. Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) introduced bipartisan legislation (S.1735) that would require approval from a federal three-judge panel before a special counsel could be dismissed, and Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) introduced a measure (S. 1741) that would bar the president from directly firing any special counsel – retroactive to Mueller's appointment in May.

The letter concludes: “Congress must demonstrate strong bipartisan support of the independent investigation and underscore that no one is above the law.”

In recent weeks, Trump loyalists have attacked Robert Mueller’s integrity and investigatory approach. In response, nearly 145,000 Americans, a number that has tripled in the past week alone, in all 50 states have signed up at TrumpIsNotAboveTheLaw.org to turn out at more than 600 protest events if Mueller is fired or in the event of other serious attempts by the Trump administration to thwart this investigation. These numbers continue to grow and protests could occur within hours of any attempt by Donald Trump to fire or interfere with Mueller’s criminal investigation.

More Than 100k Americans Nationwide Pledge To Protest If Trump Fires Mueller

500+ Emergency Events Planned In All 50 States Within Hours of Trump Firing Mueller

Number of Sign Ups at TrumpIsNotAboveTheLaw.org Skyrocketing As Attacks on Mueller and the Underlying Investigation Grow Louder

Washington, DC- More than 100,000 Americans have signed up to participate in more than 500 protests in all 50 states that would occur within hours of any attempt by Donald Trump to fire special counsel Robert Mueller and/or interfere with his criminal investigation into the Trump campaign and administration.

Sign ups have surged in recent days at TrumpIsNotAboveTheLaw.org as the attacks on special counsel Robert Mueller have grown louder by the White House, Trump’s shills in Congress and within the right-wing media. This is a clear effort to either pave the way to end the special counsel investigation—potentially through a Christmas massacre reminiscent of Watergate—or at the very least discredit the probe’s conclusions.

Concerned Americans can use the map tool or search by ZIP code to find an event near them, or create one if none exists. Protests will begin hours after news breaks of a Mueller firing.

Currently, there are more than 500 protest locations in all 50 states and include cities like Salt Lake City, Juneau, Carson City, Chattanooga, Little Rock, Tupelo, Grand Forks, Washington DC, New York City, Houston, Seattle, and Los Angeles.

TrumpIsNotAboveTheLaw.org is not organized by any individual group and is instead a collaborative effort of dozens of organizations from across the political and ideological spectrum including Truman National Security Project, MoveOn.org Civic Action, Public Citizen, Stand Up America, March for Truth, Common Cause, Indivisible, People for the American Way, Democracy 21 and Center for American Progress Action Fund.

"Trump's solution to problems with people working for him has always been ‘You're fired!’ He can't keep doing this. Firing Mueller is a red line Trump cannot be allowed to cross—this abuse of power would trigger a constitutional crisis and nothing short of a national emergency. As citizens we need to stand up to this together, in solidarity," says Elizabeth H., host of the event in Fort Collins, CO, on the event’s webpage.

"Special Counsel Mueller's work is in the nonpartisan national security interest of the United States. His appointment was met with bipartisan praise, and his team's work continues to produce new information about a serious attack on our sovereignty during the 2016 elections. There is no reason to conclude that work is finished until he says it is; likewise, there is every reason to assume that an administration prone to using the executive branch's influence inappropriately to their own gain might try to shut it down prematurely. If President Trump makes the unwise choice to attempt to fire Special Counsel Mueller, the American people will demand a return to the rule of law," said Michael Breen, President and CEO of Truman National Security Project.

“The American public is owed a complete accounting of the activities that occurred around the 2016 election, and the investigation is the way to achieve that goal. The smear attack on the credibility of Mueller’s work undercuts the ongoing and obvious progress that they are making to uncover the truth, and the vitriol must stop. We cannot proceed to the rapidly approaching next election without a better understanding of the Russian interference and the ancillary cover up," said Lisa Gilbert Vice President of Legislative Affairs at Public Citizen.

“Donald Trump can't fire the person leading a criminal investigation of him—for the second time—and expect to get away with it. Robert Mueller was brought in by Trump's own appointee to find the truth about alleged crimes in the Trump campaign, transition, and administration. Back then, Republicans glowed about Mueller's fitness for the task. But now that he has a guilty plea from a former cabinet-level official, we're hearing some of them do a 180. It's sad to see politicians and pundits put Trump above the law. But the American people won't make that choice. More than 100,000 Americans across the political spectrum are already prepared to mobilize in record speed should Trump fire Mueller," said David Sievers, Campaign Director, MoveOn.org.

"In June, we organized events in 150 cities to demand urgency and transparency in the Russia investigations. Now, we've reached a crisis point- and more than 500 communities will demonstrate to protect the rule of law,” said Justin Hendrix, Organizer of March for Truth.

"No one is above the law, including Donald Trump, and the American people will not put up with further interference in the Russia investigation," said Sean Eldridge, founder and president of Stand Up America. "The Resistance is mobilized, and ready to peacefully take to the streets if necessary to defend our Constitution and the rule of law,” said Sean Eldridge, President of Stand Up America.

"The American people did not stand for President Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre and they will not stand for President Trump’s firing of Special Counsel Mueller or interfering with his investigation. Our organizing efforts will help to unleash an immediate and sustained national firestorm if President Trump engages in obstruction of justice and abuse of power by attempting to derail the Mueller investigation,” said Fred Wertheimer, President of Democracy 21.

"Were the president to try to fire Bob Mueller, it would represent a democratic crisis the likes of which we have not seen since Nixon’s Saturday night massacre. Just as a bipartisan national outcry arose then, people of all parties must come together now to make clear they will not tolerate this assault on the rule of law. Our readiness as Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals to peacefully protest sends the message that the president should allow the special counsel to proceed without impediment,” said Richard Painter and Norm Eisen, G.W. Bush and Barack Obama White House Ethics Chief Counsels in a joint statement.

"Nearly one year into the presidency of Donald Trump, the critical questions surrounding Russia's intervention in the 2016 election have never been more important. The American people deserve to know the truth, and the investigation of special prosecutor Robert Mueller must be allowed to continue to its completion" said Marge Baker, executive vice president of People For the American Way. "If Trump tries to fire Mueller, issue pardons, or otherwise undermine this investigation, tens of thousands of people will be ready to take to the streets and demand accountability,” said Marge Baker, executive vice president of People For the American Way.

"If Trump were to fire Special Counsel Mueller, he would launch a constitutional crisis. Activists are prepared to immediately mobilize to defend our democracy and protect the rule of law. The American people will not tolerate this obstruction of justice, and neither should Congress,” said Elizabeth Beavers, Policy Manager of Indivisible.

"Americans are united in standing up for the fundamental principle that no one—including the President of the United States—is above the law. If President Trump obstructs justice by firing Special Counsel Mueller, tens of thousands of Americans are prepared to show up and protest such an abuse of power. We will put country over party and make clear that the rule of law must prevail,” said Karen Hobert Flynn, President of Common Cause.

Calling For Independent Commission, Release of Tax Returns to Show Potential Russian Entanglements

Washington, DC- Across the country, elected leaders, community organizers, celebrities and musicians will take the stage at #MarchForTruth rallies in more than 135 cities in the United States and abroad on June 3rd.

  • Activists including Linda Sarsour from Women’s March, Susan Lerner from Common Cause, and others

  • Artists and musicians including Hamilton star Javier Muñoz‏, appearing in New York City.

March For Truth is a national coalition of activist groups and grassroots, local organizers demanding that leaders in government defend the rule of law and fully investigate the Trump administration’s motives for interfering in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties to Donald Trump and his associates. National Partner organizations include MoveOn, Women’s March, Indivisible, Public Citizen, Free Speech for People, Town Hall Project, The Opposition, Swing Left, Stand Up America, Common Cause, OurStates, Action Group Network, flippable, Rock The Vote, Lawyers for Good Government, DailyKos, Working Families Party, Rise to Run and Progressive Democrats of America.

  • Congress should require Donald Trump to release his tax returns to clarify his business interests and obligations to any foreign entity;

  • If crimes were committed or if collusion is discovered, it must be prosecuted.

The firing of FBI Director Comey, bombshell news of memos that suggest Donald Trump attempted to influence an active FBI investigation, Senate testimony from John Brennan, Sally Yates and James Clapper, and revelations about the Trump administration’s handling of information that Mike Flynn was compromised further underscore the need for urgent, well-resourced investigations. As Representative Elijah Cummings noted last week, this investigation represents “a fight for the soul of our democracy.”

QUOTES FROM PARTNERS:

“Women’s March organizers in states across the nation are working alongside local chapters of the March For Truth to make sure that June 3rd is a call for all Americans to come together as one and march to protect the very foundation of our democracy,” said Bob Bland of the Women’s March.

"Across the country, constituents have flooded town halls to let their representatives know that they want impartial investigations into Russian interference in our elections," said Jimmy Dahman, executive director of Town Hall Project. "Transparency is critical to the democratic process, and we are proud to partner with the #MarchForTruth in holding Congress accountable to the people that elected them."

“The allegations that President Trump or members of his team may have coordinated with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election are the most explosive charges in American political history,” said Ron Fein, Legal Director of Free Speech For People. “The American people deserve and demand a credible independent investigation.”

"People around the country are connecting the dots on Donald Trump's potentially criminal undermining of our democracy because Congress refuses to do so," said Jo Comerford, MoveOn Campaign Director. "The appointment of a special counsel is good first step. Now we need Democrats and Republicans to launch an independent commission to get to the bottom of Donald Trump's ties to Russia, his conflicts of interest, and his efforts to cover them up—and we need it now."

"It's clear that Michael Flynn, who was compromised by the Russians, would still be in the White House if it weren't for leaks, yet that's all that the GOP seems to want to focus on in the #RussiaGate hearings,” said Andrea Chalupa, author, activist and #MarchForTruth organizer. “What more is this administration hiding? With our nation's sovereignty at stake, it's time for Republican leaders to put country before party just like they did during the Watergate scandal."

"If we learned anything from Sally Yates' testimony, it's that this administration has ignored attempts by loyal public servants to bring transparency. We must have full transparency throughout this investigation," said Jordan Uhl, #MarchForTruth organizer and Executive Director of the The Opposition (oppstn.com]). "We're supporting this nationwide, grassroots movement because we believe the American people want an honest, independent inquiry and, ultimately, answers."

“Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress need to know that we won't let this issue get swept under the rug, and that's why thousands of Americans across the country will be marching to demand the truth. The special counsel is an important step, but we still need an independent commission to expose the full truth of Russia's attack on our democracy to make sure it never happens again," said Sean Eldridge, founder and president of Stand Up America, a grassroots community of more than a million Americans resisting Trump and demanding an independent commission.

"Since the inauguration of President Trump, The Russian hacking of our election and potential subsequent collusion with members of the Presidential campaign has cast a pall over the entirety of the administration,” said Josef Preston, Indivisible Charleston Legislative Coordinator. “It is only natural that the people want to get to the bottom of this matter, so American democracy can be reestablished as a shining beacon of light around the world.  The world and the people need closure."

"This isn't about party.  This is about rule of law, and potentially egregious conflicts of interest within the Executive Branch," said Donna Smith, Executive Director of Progressive Democrats Of America.  "Congress must do its job legitimately, and invest serious resources into a bipartisan investigation into Russian ties with the White House, and those within the administration's direct sphere of influence.  If it can't happen within Congress, then a special prosecutor must be named, and we must get to the truth, one way or the other, in a transparent and public way."

"The Trump Administration began under a cloud of deception, winning an election tainted by foreign influence. In Chicago, we will stand indivisible in the fight for Truth." said Jason Rieger, founder Indivisible Chicago. "We will rally downtown and march to Trump Tower to push back against the endless barrage of lies emanating from the White House."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nonviolent demonstrations planned in 90+ cities on June 3rd

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Women’s March will join the March for Truth on Saturday, June 3, to demand urgency, transparency and an impartial investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. election and ties to the Trump administration.

As questions mount regarding whether the White House has engaged in a cover-up and potentially obstruction of justice, the March for Truth is calling for elected leaders to fully investigate the Trump administration’s motives for interfering in the investigation of Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election and its ties to the administration.

Nonviolent demonstrations are planned nationwide to demand:

  • An independent commission must be established and Congressional investigations should be properly resourced and pursued free of partisan interests;
  • As much information should be made available to the public as possible, and as soon as possible;
  • Congress should require Donald Trump to release his tax returns to clarify his business interests and obligations to any foreign entity;

“Women’s March organizers in states across the nation are working alongside local chapters of the March For Truth to make sure that June 3rd is a call for all Americans to come together as one and march to protect the very foundation of our democracy,” said Bob Bland of the Women’s March.

Women’s March joins other national partners including: Free Speech for People, Town Hall Project, The Opposition, and Progressive Democrats of America, in calling for a full and transparent investigation into how the Russians sought to interfere and undermine our democracy and electoral system. PRESS RELEASE: 80+ cities Join June 3rd, 2017 #MarchForTruth

Demonstrations to call for urgent, transparent and impartial investigations into Russian interference in the US election and ties to the Trump administration

  • an independent commission must be established and Congressional investigations should be properly resourced and pursued free of partisan interests;

  • Congress must compel Donald Trump to release his tax returns to clarify any foreign obligations

  • The public deserves transparency and a nonpartisan pursuit of the truth

Washington, DC- On the back of the bombshell news that Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, a coalition of grassroots, local organizers across the country have joined together under the banner of “#MarchForTruth,” calling for urgency and transparency in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties to Donald Trump and his associates. Demonstrations have been organized in 70+ cities, with more joining each day.

Alarmed at multiple reports that the House and Senate investigations are under-resourced, crippled by partisanship, and may not be complete for many months, the #MarchForTruth demands that lawmakers and agencies properly execute these inquiries to the satisfaction of the American people. The will of the people is clear- 78% of Americans want an independent investigation.

There is more than sufficient cause for alarm about the role Russian state-led hacking and information warfare played in the 2016 election, and there are crucial unanswered questions about the relationship between the Russian state and Donald Trump, his associates and his campaign. The legitimacy of the United States government may hinge on the answers to these questions. If the President was elected even in part due to collusion with a foreign effort to interfere in our democratic process, then the will of the people has been subverted.

Across the country, peaceful demonstrations will be arranged on Saturday, June 3rd. The goals are simple:

  • A special prosecutor must be named, an independent commission must be established, and Congressional investigations should be properly resourced and pursued free of partisan interests;

  • As much information should be made available to the public as possible, and as soon as possible;

  • Congress should require Donald Trump to release his tax returns to clarify his business interests and obligations to any foreign entity;

  • If crimes were committed or if collusion is discovered, it must be prosecuted.

The firing of FBI Director Comey, Senate testimony from Sally Yates and James Clapper, and revelations about the Trump administration’s handling of information that Mike Flynn was compromised further underscore the need for urgent, well-resourced investigations. As Senator Richard Blumenthal noted this week, “people want the truth uncovered about how the Russians sought to interfere and undermine our democracy and electoral system. And they also want accountability.”

Participating cities are joining daily. A selection of currently planning demonstrations include Anchorage, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Brandon FL, Charleston SC, Charlotte NC, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus OH, Eugene, Grand Rapids, Hickory NC, Helena Montana, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Madison, Montpelier, Myrtle Beach, New York, Miami, Milwaukee, Melbourne, Omaha, Palm Beach, Pensacola, Philadelphia, Portland OR, Raleigh, Rapid City, Reno, Richmond Virginia, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, Sarasota, Seattle, St. Joseph MI, St. Louis, St. Petersburg FL, Syracuse, Tri-Cities Washington, and Washington DC. More join each day.

March For Truth in Yahoo! News

Yahoo! News wrote a short blurb about March For Truth:

A “MARCH FOR TRUTH” ON TRUMP’S RUSSIAN TIES. The #TrumpRussia Twittersphere is taking its activism offline, announcing a Saturday June 3 “March for Truth” and demanding the appointment of a special prosecutor to examine possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Over the weekend the group launched a fundraising effort for planned protests in D.C., L.A. and New York, which gained attention online.

Lead organizers include Andrea Chalupa, Jordan Uhl and Justin Hendrix — “friends who have met through Twitter,” in Chalupa’s description — all of whom have been obsessed with the story. But it was only after the Daily Beast reported that the Senate Intelligence Committee was desperately understaffed and ill-prepared to undertake a real investigation into the question of Russian election-meddling that they decided to issue a call for a march.

Already they’ve had feelers from organizers in Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Austin, Raleigh, Portland, Grand Rapids, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Helena and Charleston.

“We’re pleased to see some from red states joining in,” said Hendrix. “It’s been impressive to us how much infrastructure seems to be in place for this kind of activity.”

Jonathan Chait: The Specter of Illegitimacy Haunts Trump’s First 100 Days

Jonathan Chait observes that Donald Trump, who "won the presidency despite losing by an unprecedented three million votes nationwide, with the benefit of extraordinary interventions by the FBI director and Russian intelligence to help criminalize and discredit his opponent," has brought a crisis of legitimacy to the Office of the Presidency:

Trump’s Republican allies have shut down Democratic bills to compel the president to disclose his tax returns, and raised no objection as his family has used his office to leverage their brand across the country and the globe. They have likewise slow-walked investigations into whether his campaign colluded openly with Russian hackers, or whether it was simply the unwitting beneficiary. Whatever comes out, the already-public evidence — from the financial ties between Russia and numerous Trump advisers, to Trump’s open exhortation for Russia to hack his opponent’s emails — implies the most devious subversion of the national interest since Richard Nixon covertly sabotaged the 1968 peace talks in Vietnam.

Donna Brazile: The Russia Investigations Are a Joke

Donna Brazile raises an alarm about Congressional investigations into Russian interference in Politico:

During the 2016 elections, America was subjected to the most serious cyberattack in our nation’s history: a methodical assault by a hostile foreign power on the legitimacy of our elections, our government, our institutions and even the very concept of Western democracy.

And the attacks have continued since Election Day—both in this country and against our European allies, who are currently conducting their own elections under the constant threat of Russian meddling.

It seems like nobody is doing anything about it.

Announcing the #MarchForTruth

Restoring Faith in American Government

Demonstrations to call for an impartial investigation into Russian interference in the US election and ties to the Trump administration

Saturday, June 3rd, 2017

There is more than sufficient cause for alarm about the role Russian state-led hacking and information warfare played in the 2016 election, and there are crucial unanswered questions about the relationship between the Russian state and Donald Trump, his associates and his campaign. The legitimacy of the United States government may hinge on the answers to these questions. If the President was elected even in part due to collusion with a foreign effort to interfere in our democratic process, then the will of the people has been subverted.

There is an active FBI investigation into these matters, and revelations may emerge any moment. But Congressional investigations in the House and Senate have been slow, under-resourced, and mired in partisan politics. Many Congressional leaders have called for an independent investigation, a special prosecutor or a commission to fairly investigate these concerns. Despite the clear will of the people, their calls have not been answered.

Therefore, we call for a #MarchForTruth to raise our voices and let our elected leaders know that American citizens want answers. The legitimacy of our democracy is more important than the interests of any party, or any President. So, we will rise together to call for a fair and impartial investigation, for the pursuit of truth, and for the restoration of faith in our electoral system and the Office of the Presidency.

Across the country, peaceful demonstrations will be arranged on Saturday, June 3rd. Our goals are simple:

  • Congressional investigations should be properly resourced and pursued free of partisan interests, or an independent investigation must be established,

  • As much information should be made available to the public as possible, and as soon as possible,

  • If crimes were committed or if collusion is discovered, it must be prosecuted.

We need help. We are asking on cities around the country to organize. We are looking for volunteers to help secure permits, find speakers, and take care of the logistics to make this peaceful assembly matter. Email marchfortruth@gmail.com for more information.
